Watch dictionary - You should know these important watch terms

There are a number of terms in the watch industry that you should know if you are interested in watches or if you own/want to buy one. Whether you are a watch lover, collector or just curious, in this blog you will find an overview of the most important terms that will help you to better understand the language in the watch world. We at GOAT LUXURY have briefly explained and defined 30 common terms.

 

  1. Automatic - a movement that winds itself by movement of the wearer
  2. Chronograph - a watch with a stopwatch function
  3. Chronometer - a precise timepiece that meets certain standards of precision. Tested and certified by official inspection bodies
  4. COSC - the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, which tests the accuracy of watches
  5. Co-Axial Escapement - a movement where the escapement wheel has a co-axial bearing to reduce friction and wear
  6. Day-Date Display - a feature that displays the day and date
  7. Pushers - located next to the crown and necessary to operate the chronograph start/stop function
  8. Flyback - a function of a chronograph that allows you to reset and restart the stopwatch directly without stopping it first
  9. Accuracy - the accuracy with which a watch measures time
  10. Power reserve - the length of time a watch continues to run after it has been wound
  11. GMT - a watch with a second time zone
  12. Hand-wound - a movement that requires manual winding
  13. Indices - Markers or numbers on the face of a watch that serve to indicate the hours or minutes
  14. Calendar movement - a movement that automatically displays the date, week and month
  15. Caliber - originally the diameter of a clockwork, but today exclusively a synonym for the movement of a clock
  16. Rubber - a material of the strap that is particularly suitable for use under water
  17. Complication - additional functions of a watch that go beyond the basic function of telling time
  18. Bezel - the movable ring around a watch's face that can be used for various functions
  19. Mechanical - a movement powered by a spring
  20. MOP (Mother of Pearl) - a dial made of mother-of-pearl
  21. Moonphase - an indicator on a watch showing the current position of the moon
  22. Quartz movement - a movement based on oscillating quartz crystal technology. Runs on a battery
  23. Rattrapante - a watch with two seconds hands, one of which can be stopped while the other continues to run
  24. Reference - Based on the reference number, a watch model can be assigned to the respective manufacturer. Abbreviation: "Ref"
  25. Regulator - a clock with separate hands for hours, minutes and seconds
  26. Sandwich dial - a special technique in watchmaking, where the dial consists of several layers. Two layers are filled with luminescent paint and a layer of cut-out numbers and indices lies in between
  27. Skeleton watch - a watch where part of the movement is visible
  28. Sonnerie - a function in a watch that periodically chimes the hour
  29. Tachymeter scale - a scale on a watch that allows speeds to be measured
  30. Tourbillon - a complicated movement that compensates for irregularities in the measurement of time
